Power Generation Sealing Solutions

Power generation equipment operates under conditions that test every sealing component to its limits — high steam pressures, extreme thermal cycling, continuous duty operation and the consequence that any seal failure carries in a generation environment. A leaking turbine gasket, a failing boiler feed pump seal or a deteriorating steam valve packing does not just create a maintenance problem. It creates an operational risk that affects generation output, safety and planned maintenance schedules.

Kaybin manufactures sealing and gasket components for power generation applications, with particular capability in custom-profiled turbine gaskets, high-temperature gland packing for steam systems, and mechanical seals for boiler feed and process pumps. Where OEM components are discontinued or carry lead times that planned maintenance schedules cannot accommodate, Kaybin reverse-engineers from a worn sample or dimensional survey conducted during a shutdown and manufactures the replacement locally.

Where Standard Components Fall Short in Power Generation

Older power station units present specific sealing challenges that standard catalogue components are not designed to address. The turbine and auxiliary equipment in an older generating unit may have been in service for decades. Original OEM seal specifications may have changed, components may be discontinued, and the dimensional tolerances of worn equipment may no longer match the standard profiles in a manufacturer's catalogue.

Pre-cut sheet gaskets are a common response to this situation — accessible, available, and sufficient as a temporary measure. Over the service life of an older turbine, however, pre-cut sheet gaskets consistently underperform compared with custom-profiled moulded components. A sheet gasket cannot replicate the precision geometry of a moulded profile, and the resulting inconsistency in compression and contact surface coverage means more frequent replacement and less reliable sealing between planned shutdowns.

For steam valve packing, the combination of temperature, pressure and cycle frequency demands a construction that maintains compression and sealing performance across the full maintenance interval. Graphite and carbon packing constructions are specified for continuous high-temperature steam service — not because they are the cheapest option, but because the construction characteristics match the thermal and mechanical demands of the application.

Kaybin's Approach to Power Generation Sealing

Every power generation application Kaybin supports begins with a technical review of the operating conditions — steam temperature and pressure, duty cycle, shaft speed for rotating equipment, and the maintenance interval the component needs to perform across. Material and construction selection follows from those conditions.

For turbine lid and casing gaskets, Kaybin carries out dimensional mapping of the contact surfaces during planned shutdowns and manufactures custom-profiled moulded components to the exact geometry required. The result is a component that fits correctly, compresses consistently across the full contact surface, and performs reliably through the thermal cycling the turbine operates through.

For steam valve packing, Kaybin supplies graphite, carbon and PTFE gland packing constructions selected for the temperature class and pressure rating of the specific valve. For boiler feed pump mechanical seals, the selection criteria include temperature, pressure differential, shaft speed and the fluid being sealed — boiler feed water presents specific challenges around dissolved oxygen and temperature that require careful compound and face material selection.

Application Proof — Power Station Turbine Lid Gaskets

An older power station was experiencing more frequent than expected gasket replacement cycles on a turbine lid. The operation had been using pre-cut sheet gaskets — an accessible solution that was available from local stock but not performing to the service life the maintenance schedule required.

During a planned plant shutdown, Kaybin conducted a full dimensional mapping of the turbine lid, capturing the internal and external gasket profile geometry, surface conditions and dimensional tolerances. Custom-profiled moulded gaskets were manufactured to fit the exact geometry of the turbine lid rather than approximating it with a sheet-cut profile.

The custom moulded gaskets significantly extended service life. Components that had been requiring unscheduled replacement now perform reliably through to planned maintenance intervals — when the shutdown is resourced and scheduled rather than reactive. The geometry of the component, correctly engineered for the specific application, delivered the performance improvement that material selection alone could not have achieved.

Request a Technical Specification

If your power generation equipment is on more frequent replacement cycles than the maintenance schedule allows for, or if you are dependent on OEM supply chains with unacceptable lead times for critical sealing components, Kaybin can help. Send us a worn sample, a drawing, or arrange access during your next planned shutdown and our technical team will specify and manufacture the correct component for your application.

  • Manufacturing & Heavy Industry

Kaybin supplies precision seals, gaskets, and polymer components that keep heavy machinery and production lines running. Our solutions are built for high loads, vibration, and continuous duty—reducing leaks, wear, and unexpected stoppages. When a part is non-standard or obsolete, we engineer the replacement so your plant stays in motion, not in maintenance.

  • Oil & Gas

Kaybin supplies seals and gaskets for upstream, midstream, and downstream operations where failure is not an option. Our components are engineered for high pressure, high temperature, and aggressive media—helping prevent leaks, protect people and equipment, and avoid costly shutdowns. When conditions are harsh and access is limited, you need sealing solutions you can fit once and trust.

  • Mining & Minerals

Kaybin seals and gaskets are built for the shock, dust, slurry, and vibration that destroy standard components. From crushers and screens to pumps and processing lines, our solutions resist abrasion, impact, and harsh chemicals—helping keep ore moving, not equipment in the workshop. When downtime is measured in tons lost, you need sealing you can rely on shift after shift.

  • Power Gnerations

Kaybin provides sealing solutions for turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, and balance-of-plant equipment. Our components are designed for pressure, temperature cycling, and continuous operation—helping prevent leaks that lead to efficiency loss or forced outages. When megawatts and uptime are on the line, you need seals that stay stable, not sensitive.`

  • Food & Beverage

Kaybin supplies FDA-compliant, food-grade seals and polymer components for processing, filling, and packaging lines. Our materials are non-toxic, non-tainting, and easy to clean—helping protect product purity and hygiene while equipment runs at speed. When a seal fails, you risk both downtime and contamination. We help you avoid both

  • Automative & Transportation

Kaybin engineers seals and polymer components for vehicles, trailers, and heavy equipment that work hard every day. Our solutions are designed for constant movement, temperature swings, and exposure to oils, fuels, and road contaminants—helping prevent leaks, premature wear, and breakdowns. When reliability on the road is non-negotiable, you need components that last the distance.
