Chevron Packs (Vee Packing Sets) for High-Pressure Hydraulic & Pneumatic Cylinders

Kaybin manufactures custom Chevron packs (vee packing sets) for hydraulic cylinder packing applications where high pressure, shock loading, and rod misalignment demand stable multi-lip sealing. Each packing set is configured to your gland depth, rod or bore diameter, and operating conditions to deliver reliable sealing performance in heavy industrial equipment across South Africa and Africa.

Chevron packs are stacked sealing systems consisting of male and female adaptor rings with multiple vee-shaped intermediate sealing rings. As pressure increases, the lips energise outward, increasing sealing force against the rod or bore. This makes them suitable for demanding hydraulic and pneumatic service where single-lip seals may not provide sufficient extrusion resistance.

Typical Applications

  • Hydraulic presses
  • Mining and heavy-duty cylinders
  • Materials handling equipment
  • Injection moulding machines
  • Mobile hydraulics
  • Industrial actuators and ram cylinders
  • Deep gland packing cavities

Chevron packs are used for:

  • Rod sealing (gland packing)
  • Piston sealing (pressure separation)
  • Back-to-back configurations in double-acting cylinders

Material Stack Configurations

Chevron sets are built using layered materials to balance friction, wear resistance, and extrusion control.

Dynamic Vee Rings

  • NBR – general hydraulic oil service
  • Polyurethane (PU) – high wear and shock resistance
  • Fabric-reinforced elastomers – improved extrusion resistance under pressure spikes
  • PTFE (virgin or filled) – lower friction and chemical resistance for specialised service

Adaptor Rings (Male / Female)

  • Nylon
  • Acetal (POM)
  • Phenolic / composite materials

Material combinations are selected based on working pressure, shock profile, rod speed, fluid type, temperature range, and expected side load.

Pressure & Duty Positioning

  • Medium to very high hydraulic pressures
  • Shock-loaded cylinders
  • Large diameter rods
  • Deep packing cavities
  • Applications requiring adjustable stack compression

Stack height and number of vee rings are configured to match housing depth and sealing force requirements.

Failure Modes Addressed

  • Extrusion and nibbling
  • Lip rollover
  • Stack collapse
  • Compression set
  • Rod scoring
  • Leakage under pressure spikes
  • Cavity blow-by

Correct material grade and stack configuration directly influence extrusion resistance and service life.
