O-Rings – BS1806 / ISO 3601 Standard & Custom-Moulded
Kaybin supplies and manufactures industrial rubber O-rings for BS1806 and ISO 3601 standard glands, as well as custom-moulded O-rings to drawing, OEM reference or sample. O-rings are specified to suit media, temperature, pressure and groove design to minimise leakage, extrusion and long-term compression set in industrial and OEM equipment.
This page covers circular rubber O-rings only – not flat gaskets, mechanical seals or complete seal kits.
Function & Typical Applications
Function:
- Provides radial or axial sealing between mating components
- Maintains sealing squeeze under pressure
- Controls leakage in static and limited dynamic duty
- Works with back-up rings where extrusion gaps increase
Typical Applications:
- Hydraulic and pneumatic manifolds and cylinders
- Pumps, valves, gearboxes and motor housings
- Flanged joints, inspection covers and service plugs
- OEM builds and maintenance replacement of BS / ISO sizes
Correctly selected O-rings reduce leakage, limit downtime and protect surrounding components from fluid loss or contamination.
Material Options
O-rings are supplied in application-specific elastomers:
- NBR (Nitrile) – mineral oils, fuels and general hydraulic duty
- EPDM – hot water, steam (within limits) and cleaning chemicals (not mineral oils)
- FKM / Viton® – elevated temperatures and aggressive fluids
- Neoprene (CR) – weathering and moderate oil resistance
- Silicone (VMQ) – wide temperature range and selected hygienic uses
- Additional compounds available on request
Compound and hardness (Shore A) are selected based on sealing force, compression-set resistance, chemical compatibility and operating environment.
Sizing & Standards
- BS1806 and ISO 3601 standard size ranges supported
- Metric and imperial cross-sections
- Matching of existing O-rings from sample or OEM code
- Custom-moulded O-rings where no standard size or compound is suitable
Best practice is to confirm O-ring selection against groove / gland dimensions rather than nominal size alone.
Operating Conditions
Designed for:
- Static sealing applications
- Reciprocating and slow rotary motion within elastomer limits
- Low to higher pressures (hardware-dependent)
- Oil, air, water and selected chemical media (compound-dependent)
Specification focuses on controlling extrusion, spiral failure, swelling and compression set through correct material and groove fit.
Quick 30-Second Spec Guide
To identify the correct O-ring:
- Standard size (BS / ISO) or measured ID and cross-section
- Application type (static, reciprocating, slow rotary)
- Media (oil, water, air, chemicals)
- Pressure and temperature range
- Groove / gland dimensions if available
A drawing, photo or sample can significantly speed up confirmation.
Engineering Details Required
For precise specification, provide:
- ID and cross-section (or BS / ISO code)
- Motion type and duty cycle
- Working and peak pressure
- Temperature range
- Media and contamination exposure
- Groove / gland dimensions and hardware material (if known)
- Quantity and urgency
Kaybin then confirms compound, hardness and dimensional suitability and supplies standard or custom-moulded O-rings for reliable sealing performance in industrial equipment across South Africa and Africa.
