Piston, Rod & Wiper Seals for Hydraulic & Pneumatic Cylinders
Kaybin manufactures custom rubber piston seals, rod seals, U-seals and wiper/scraper seals for hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders where reliable dynamic sealing is critical.
Seals are moulded or machined to drawing, groove dimensions or sample and matched to pressure class, extrusion gap, stroke speed and contamination exposure to control leakage and extend cylinder service life in industrial and OEM equipment.
This page covers reciprocating cylinder seals (not rotary oil seals or mechanical seals).
Function & Applications
Primary roles:
- Dynamic sealing on pistons and rods
- Prevention of internal bypass
- Exclusion of dust, slurry and water
- Control of extrusion and contamination
Used in:
- Hydraulic presses and rams
- Mobile equipment and mining cylinders
- Pneumatic actuators and automation systems
- OEM industrial machinery
Seal Types
- Piston seals – single- and double-acting
- U-seals / U-cups – symmetrical or asymmetrical profiles
- Rod seals – external leakage control
- Double-acting seals – bidirectional pressure
- Wiper / scraper seals – contamination removal
Where required, seal stacks may include guide rings and anti-extrusion back-up elements to manage side-load and clearance growth.
Material Options (Rubber-Based)
- NBR – mineral oil hydraulic systems
- EPDM – water/steam (not mineral oil)
- Neoprene (CR) – balanced oil/weather resistance
- FKM / Viton® – elevated temperature and aggressive fluids
- Silicone (VMQ) – wide temperature range
- Natural Rubber – resilience for selected duties
Compound hardness (Shore A) is selected based on pressure, speed, temperature, media and extrusion gap.
Operating Conditions
Designed for:
- Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders (single- or double-acting)
- Reciprocating motion under load
- Side-load and vibration conditions
- Contaminated or mining-duty environments
Correct specification reduces extrusion, spiral failure, stick-slip, compression set and rod scoring.
Engineering Details Required
Provide:
- Bore and rod diameter
- Groove / gland dimensions
- Working and peak pressure
- Stroke length and cycle rate
- Fluid/media and temperature
- Contamination level
- Drawing, part number or sample.
Kaybin confirms the correct profile, compound and seal stack arrangement before manufacture to ensure reliable dynamic cylinder sealing in industrial equipment.
